Rosa Iris is a young attorney on a mission. In 1937, tens of thousands of Haitians and Dominicans of Haitian descent were exterminated from the Dominican Republic, based solely on policies of anti-black hatred. In 2013, the Dominican Republic’s Supreme Court stripped the citizenship of anyone with Haitian parents retroactive to 1929, rendering over 200,000 people stateless, without nationality, identity or homeland. Stateless tells the story of Rosa’s impassioned campaign to win back citizenship for those left adrift. Weaving together elements of magical realism and intimate documentary, the film explores the personal impact of a political fight for identity, through the lense of a woman’s struggle to reinstate a feeling of being ‘home’ for her compatriots.
