It was 1982, when Ana’s father Emil, a political activist – alongside 45,000 others – was detained and disappeared by Guatemala’s military. In search of justice for her father, Ana submerges herself in the memory of her dad’s family, finding traces of pain and the repression of a generation that was silenced. Ana Bustamante’s debut documentary is a deeply intimate exploration of a country in need to confront its past. It gently weaves the personal with the social, aware that images are memories, forgotten and reinvented; that healing is a repetitive circular process of questioning, and that relating to one’s own pain is part of a social justice that must be examined.

Winner of the Ibero-American Documentary special jury prize at the Guadalajara Film Festival, Bustamante’s debut documentary is a haunting and deeply personal exploration of a country that has yet to come to terms with its past.
