I often wondered if our endless campus debates had anything to do with his dramatic change of heart. As Howard Zhao was exchanging reminiscences with Zhou Enlai, I was trying to figure out what to do with the rest of my life. Out of college with no job prospects, I was armed only with what seemed to be a useless degree in Chinese Studies, an overwhelming desire to go to the People's Republic, and vague notions that the way to get there might be to become a foreign correspondent. One truck carried a placard identifying its occupants as workers from the Capital Iron and Steel Works, Beijing's biggest factory.

Soon after came the earthshaking news that President Richard Nixon himself would travel to China the following year. On February 21, 1972, I had sat transfixed in my living room, watching an American president set foot on the frozen tarmac at Beijing airport to shake the hand of Premier Zhou Enlai. My fascination at what I was seeing overcame my discomfort that the country I viewed as a shining symbol of revolutionary virtue was welcoming the right-wing president I loved to hate.
