Southern Hemisphere Drift Alignment Align your tripod with the south celestial pole as well as you can. Point the telescope towards the celestial equator and due north. Pick the nearest reasonably bright star. Turn the camera or the eyepiece so that one of the cross-hairs points along the direction in which the star ‘moves’ if the motor drive is momentarily disconnected or switched off. This direction is west. The opposite direction is obviously east. You will get less confused if you rotate the camera so that west is left and east is right, just like on a map.

You often also get better quality glass and anti-reflective coatings if you pay more. Three other issues are at least as important, possibly more so: chromatic aberration, eye relief and confocality. Eyepieces do suffer from chromatic aberration. If your budget stretches to the more expensive, apochromatic eyepieces are definitely worth considering. This consists of a corrector plate, which is a glass lens, a primary concave or positive mirror, and a secondary convex, or negative mirror. An eyepiece or a camera may be placed beyond the focal point as with other telescopes. This particular design is a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope (Image by the author) Fig. 15 (a–b) A Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope in practice.
